For #FlashbackFriday, we want to recognize our Educator and our Employee of the Month from March.

Sarah Kovalcik was awarded the Educator of the Month for March and was recognized during the March Board of Trustees Meeting. Kovalcik joined Huntsville ISD in January of 2023 as a PE Teacher at our former Gibbs PreK Center. She is now the PE Coach at Estella Stewart Elementary. She is a CKH (Capturing Kids Hearts) Traction Leader. Coach K is always very professional, motivated, thoughtful, and creative, and brings energy and Inspiration to all. We are so Thankful that she chose to Build Champions at Estella Stewart Elementary. We are proud to recognize her as the Huntsville ISD Educator of the Month for March.

Michael Watkins was awarded the Employee of the Month of March. Watkins joined Huntsville ISD after a 24-year career with New Waverly ISD. Watkins is the Custodian at Estella Stewart Elementary, and he takes great pride in his work and the appearance of the school. Watkins is always willing to go the extra mile. Huntsville ISD appreciates Michael for taking care of our Champions at Estella Stewart Elementary, and we are proud to name him HISD Employee of the Month in March.

For #FlashbackFriday, we are commemorating our March Board of Trustees Meeting.

We want to thank the Samuel Walker Houston Elementary Student Council for doing an excellent job with the Pledges at the March Board meeting.

SWHE was also recognized for being named the 2025-2026 MTSS Momentum Award by Branching Minds! SWHE was selected as a winner in the MTSS PBIS Implementation category for its dedication to having high-quality, consistent implementation of a schoolwide system that improves behavior and school culture.

As an MTSS Momentum Award recipient, SWHE received a $300 gift card and an MTSS Momentum School Banner to display on campus. To find more information, visit the Branching Minds website and social media platforms, and listen to their podcast Schoolin' Around-The Three Big Rocks of PBIS: Expectations, Relationships, and Cultures. Check out this video highlighting another special example of student success and community support in Huntsville ISD!
Here, we focus on our students who participated in the Walker County Fair, and on the many people who help make that experience even more meaningful through the Huntsville ISD Buyers Group.
The fair represents months of hard work, responsibility, and dedication for our students, and this video gives us a chance to recognize not only their effort, but also the unique way Huntsville ISD and our community come together to support them.
The Huntsville ISD Buyers Group is about much more than a name. It reflects a broad community of people who believe in our students and choose to invest in their success.

At their most recent meeting, the POP (Promoting Our Positives) committee honored Huntsville ISD Superintendent Dr. Sheppard on his retirement and thanked him for his service to Huntsville ISD!
As you may already know, POP is a group of motivated, passionate leaders and doers made up of representatives from Sam Houston State, local faith communities, non profits, civic organizations and businesses from across Huntsville and Walker County that meet monthly (and seem to work daily) on behalf of Huntsville ISD and the children and families of Huntsville and Walker County!
Back close to 10 years ago, three motivated Huntsville ladies saw that there was a need for a committee like this, and approached the Huntsville and Walker County Chamber Commerce for help. The Chamber opened their doors and has hosted and supported POP ever since!
In recent months, members of the CASE committee, SAAFE House, Sam Houston State, literacy partner ATime2Read, the Huntsville Junior Service League, and churches (like Warren Chapel Church, pictured here with a donation) have all shared their efforts to the group. This is about connection and collaboration! One of the highlights of the committee is hearing directly from our students- and members of the Hornet Success Academy, an alternative to the traditional high school experience, presented this month, following up on a student led presentation by our Fine Arts students earlier in the Spring. This is what we mean when we say #CommunityConnect and #HomeSweetHuntsville !!

Every year, the usually quiet ‘streets’ of a little corner of Huntsville come alive as our local public safety agencies join with Huntsville ISD and the Rotary Club to host the annual two day kid safety extravaganza, Safety Town!

For our 20 years, this remarkable little town is the place where ALL of our first graders can have fun and learn safety over the course of a morning field trip.

Our kiddos make the trip to learn about safety of all kinds-- being safe at home, on the sidewalk, on your bike, in the woods, on the bus- you name it!
We are so grateful to Huntsville Rotary for this gift to our community, and everyone- including our students- who lend a helping hand to teach our students!
This is definitely a one of a kind Huntsville ISD learning tradition, and many of the people that are there as teachers were once visiting as first graders!

Thank you to all of our participants- of course we could not do it without you!

This is not the biggest team around, and they do not always have the same built-in advantages as some of the programs they compete against.
But this season, the Hornets made sure people noticed.
District Success. State Qualifiers. A Relay Team That Refused To Lower Its Expectations. And Greyson Breaking A School Record.
For A Small Team, Those Are Big Waves!!

Yes, it was a frustrating (1-0) loss for our team, but don’t get it mixed up— this was a fantastic, historic season for Huntsville ISD boys soccer! Congratulations to you all!

It’s testing time- so it’s quiet around the campuses so students and teachers can focus on doing their best—

However, our teachers and campuses come up with ways to get our students prepared in the classroom and out– like over at Huntsville Elementary School, who hosted their annual Rock the STAAR Run at Huntsville ISD!

Students walk over to the sound of rock music, then run the length of the field and make a loop around the track!

It’s a way to burn off some energy and get the wiggles out!

We spotted Coach Stewart and Coach Moebes greeting the students, along with members of the Sam Houston Track Team and of course– the Huntsville Elementary Teachers and Staff! Yes, some teachers DID in fact join in the run!

Good luck everybody— Do your Best, Show What You Know and Sting ‘em Hornets!

Huntsville ISD’s Coach Jason Elliott was recently recognized as the recipient of the 2026 Gulf South Summit Outstanding Community Partner Award. As Huntsville ISD’s Adapted Physical Education teacher, Coach Elliott serves as the community partner at the heart of Sam Houston State University’s Adapted Physical Activity Project, one of the longest-standing academic community engagement course partnerships at SHSU.

We’re proud to share photos from both the recent award presentation and this long-standing partnership in action!

For the past 17 years, Huntsville ISD students have traveled to the SHSU campus for weekly activity sessions each semester, where they connect with students in SHSU’s KINE 4369: Adapted Physical Activity course at the SHSU Recreation Center.

This lasting collaboration gives SHSU kinesiology students valuable hands-on experience while creating meaningful opportunities for Huntsville ISD students.
Congratulations to Coach Jason Elliott on this well-earned recognition, and thank you to Dr. Min Kim, and all the people at The Community Engagement Center at Sam Houston State, along with Coach’s teaching team at Huntsville ISD, for making this happen!!

Everyone is an athlete!

We have lots more photos to share from the "classroom" at our photo gallery- check it out https://photos.app.goo.gl/jc14UWcmkUTCdGmh8

It’s all over but the clean up at the 2026 Walker County Fair, and we are so proud of our Huntsville ISD students that worked so hard, and super grateful for all of the support our community showed to our kids these past few weeks.

Powered by our most successful and profitable Buyers Group ever, along with community partners throughout Walker County, we were able to support all of our students who made it to sale– it’s a great feeling and we could not have done it without you!
