Greyson Lutterschmidt officially etched his name into the Huntsville High School history books. Competing at the Conference 5A - Region 4 Swimming and Diving Regionals, the Hornet shattered the school record in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 21.84 seconds.
Beating the previous record, a 21.96 held by Colson Slaven, had stood for more than 15 years.
The record-breaking performance took place at the Community Resource Credit Union Natatorium in New Caney, Texas.
On Friday, the Huntsville Athletics department invited Lutterschmidt to scale the ladder and hang the new record himself.
For Lutterschmidt, the moment was years in the making. “Ever since freshman year, I’ve seen the record and have always wanted my name up there,” he said. Looking up at the board he’d been staring at for four years, Lutterschmidt finally saw his own name and said, “It’s a dream come true.”
