The Huntsville Hornet Cheer team concluded their appearance at the NCA High School Nationals this weekend, securing a fifth-place finish in the Novice Varsity Crowd Leading - Small division.
The event, which is one of the largest competitive cheerleading stages in the country, typically brings together more than 500 schools. However, a wave of severe winter weather across Texas and surrounding states created significant travel hazards for many participating teams
Recognizing that many squads were stranded due to icy road conditions and flight cancellations, Varsity Brands, the organization behind the event, opened a virtual pathway for competition.
“We are offering the Virtual Championships as an alternative competition experience,” said Brian Bianco, spokesperson for Varsity Brands. “Those routines will be recorded Thursday and Friday, with the results posted at the end of the weekend.”
This allowed teams to compete for national rankings without risking the safety of their athletes and staff.
Faced with these environmental obstacles, the Huntsville Hornets elected to utilize the virtual option. This required the team to record their high-stakes routine in a controlled environment earlier in the week to be evaluated by the NCA judging panel.

The competing squad included Ryah A., Jenna H., Aubrey J., Sammie Q., Maegan H., Payton P., Alexa V., Natalie S., Jayda W., and Aubree J.
The Hornets’ performance marks a successful conclusion to a season defined by both talent and adaptability. By securing a national ranking, the squad demonstrated a level of professionalism that extended well beyond the mat.
“I am incredibly proud of this group of girls and all the hard work they have put in since July. We are in an incredibly deep division, and for it being our first time ever, they did an incredible job. We would have loved to have been able to go and compete both days in Fort Worth, but having that virtual option was great,” said Coach Lauren Hayes. “The girls showed a lot of grit and acclimated to the virtual change quickly. We are very thankful for the students, teachers, and admins who came and supported us while we filmed our video. Coach Langley and I are excited to prepare for a new season and to continue to grow this program. I can't wait to see all the amazing things that happen next season!”
As the winter weather clears, the team returns to Huntsville with a top-five national finish under their belts. This achievement highlights the program's upward momentum and establishes a strong foundation for the Hornets as they turn their focus toward future seasons.
Tryouts for the Hornet Cheer High School and Middle School will be held March 2-6.
