Several Campuses Placed on SECURE (Lockout) Status for Precaution
Huntsville ISD Parents/Guardians,
This morning multiple campuses were placed on SECURE (LOCKOUT) status as a precaution due to an outside threat in a nearby neighborhood in the proximity of Huntsville Elementary School. All students and staff were brought indoors and the perimeter doors of the campuses were secured. Out of an abundance of caution, Mance Park Middle School, the Westmoreland Academy, Huntsville High School, along with Transportation and the Hawkins Administration Building were also placed on a SECURE (LOCKOUT) status as well. Initially Huntsville Elementary and Stewart Elementary were placed on a brief LOCKDOWN, but the Stewart was released due to their proximity not being near the actual threat and Huntsville Elementary status was changed to the SECURE (LOCKOUT) instead. While police continued their investigation, school operations and student instruction took place inside, perimeter doors remained secured and monitored closely, as well as increased police presence outside for extra precaution. At approximately 9:40 am, law enforcement gave the all clear and all locations were able to return to normal operations. Police indicated at that the suspect was in custody.
We appreciate the swift action taken by our campus administrators and School Resources Officers and we are very thankful for the quick response from our local law enforcement. We are very proud of the way our students and staff responded this morning by following our emergency procedures. Per the district's Standard Response Protocol for emergency situations, when a campus or facility is placed on an emergency status, there are specific actions to follow.
We encourage you to familiarize yourself with our protocols by visiting https://www.huntsville-isd.org/safety.
Student and staff safety is our top priority and we will always exercise great caution to help keep everyone safe. Thank you for your cooperation and understanding today. If your child expresses any concerns, or you have questions, please feel free to contact their school/grade level counselor.
