Mrs. Virginia Mathiews

I am a 3rd grade ELA and social studies teacher at Stewart Elementary in room 310.  I am starting my 6th year in Huntsville ISD, and my 14 year overall. Prior to that I worked in Midlothian and Waxahachie ISD.  I have taught 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grade.  I am starting my 9th year teaching 3rd grade.  My math science partner is Mr. Baiter in room 311.

A little bit about me....

I am 2003 cum laude graduate of Baylor University with a BS in Education, specializing in Early Childhood.  I am certified to teach PK-6th grade, with an early childhood, ESL, and GT endorsement.  I am a 1999 graduate of Waxahachie High School, where I grew up.  I have 2 lovely daughters.  My husband, Shawn, is also an athletic trainer at the High School.  When I am not teaching, I enjoy running, cooking (I also teach the HEAP Fun with Foods class), sewing, and reading.  I also teach ballet and tap several days a week at a local dance studio.

My Why....

My mother is a retired home economics teacher of 35 years (all in the classroom).  Growing up, I really wanted to go into journalism or law.  My amazing dance teacher, Victoria Ayers, asked for some help teaching some ballet classes when I was.  At the time, I didn't really want to be like my mother, but I really loved my teacher, so I agreed to help.  I fell in love with teaching and realized through that experience that teaching is what I am supposed to do with my life.  My decision to teach was not met with enthusiam by my classmates, who thought I was really wasting my time and talents.  It really offended me that they thought that to be a teacher you didn't really have to be all that smart or bright.  I graduated 5th in my high school class of over 300.  I really do believe that your child deserves to have a intelligent, highly educated professional to be his/her teacher.  I love working with children everyday and sharing books with your children.
