First grade is such an exciting year of growth for these students, and I can't wait to see whats in store for this year. Feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns you have, I am a firm believer in open communication and making sure you as the parents are a part of your childs education. I can be reached by phone at the school, email, or Class Dojo. I will also send home notes in their folder along with signing their planner at the end of the day. My expectations for your student this year will be high! There will be spelling homework to go hand in hand with the spelling patterns we are learning that week. This will also be sent home on Monday and due back on Friday.

Students are expected to read EVERY night.  They will keep track of their reading with a Reading Log where you will write the name of the book and the date read with a parent or guardian signature.

Homework is an important way to be involved in your child’s learning.  Please support your child in doing the work but don’t do it for them.  You can remind your child where or how to find the answer but try not to jump in and give the answer.

    Planners and Folders

Your child's folder and planner may also be used as a communication tool.  If you need to communicate something important, simply write it in the planner. This is also a great way to see your child's behavior for the day. We simply ask that it be signed daily and returned to school the next day. Please also take out any papers in the "keep at home" side and look for important papers in the "return to school" section.

Look for your child's weekly specials schedule in the weekly newsletter, as each week will be different. Make sure your child also wears comfortable shoes for PE days.

    Conference Time: 12:10-1:10

You may send in a treat and/or juice. Please check with me to make sure the date you choose will work with our schedule.  You may send the treat with your child that morning or come after 2:30 p.m. Please make sure that ALL treats are peanut free.

    Field Trips

Permission slips must be signed before your child can go on a field trip. These will be sent out a few weeks before the trip.  Look for more information about dates and field trips. If a parent or guardian would like to attend, make sure to let me know and you must fill out the “volunteer” form on the HISD website.

Please send in headphones for your child.  They will be kept in a plastic bag and students will use them when working with computers in the classroom.

A snack schedule will be sent monthly starting in September. Please provide enough snack for the class (22 students) for the days listed. Remember to keep snack items in the healthier range. Some great items for snack include graham crackers, goldfish, animal crackers, gummies, dry cereal like Cheerios and Fruit Loops, cheez-its, dried fruit, trail mix, sunflower seeds without shells, raisins, granola, granola bars, cereal bars, pretzels, rice cakes and any other cracker. Individually packaged items work well, but they are not required.

Please make sure that your child has a lunch or $2.20 lunch money for school. You can place lunch money in an envelope/Ziploc labeled with your child’s name or you can add money to his/her account via the HISD website. If you choose to come eat lunch with your child, he or she may pick one friend to join them at the extra table. Students will not be allowed to share food. Our lunch time will be from 11:05 a.m. to 11:35 a.m.

Newsletters will be sent home weekly, which will include important information about our classroom and what we are learning for the week. Please keep in a central location to help discuss what your child learned each week at school.

    Toys and Cards

Please do not allow your child to bring toys or cards to school. They are easily lost or broken. This includes any and all electronics and cell phones.

Anyone who is interested in lending a hand is welcome to do so.  We have many opportunities to help out at home or in school.  Ask me about specific opportunities!
