• Welcome to Gibbs Pre-Kindergarten!  We’re located at 1800 19th Street in the heart of the city less than a half mile from Sam Houston State University.

The Gibbs Pre-K Center serves 4-year-old students and 3-year-old students with special needs. To be eligible for enrollment, students must meet one of the criteria set by the state of Texas;  however, students may also attend on a tuition-based system.

Gibbs Pre-K school doors open at 7:30 a.m. and our students leave after a full day of learning at 3:30 p.m.

The Texas Education Agency (TEA) states “The learning experiences of the preschool years provide students with a foundation that guides children academically, socially, and emotionally” (2008).

Gibbs Pre-K teachers provide students with effective teaching practices and opportunities for children to discover, explore, create, and learn which leads to significant growth in children’s intellectual and social development.  Gibbs Pre-K teachers implement the Prekindergarten Guidelines mandated by the state of Texas, which are based on early childhood theory and scientific research about child development and learning. The Prekindergarten Guidelines are designed to help teachers implement a comprehensive curriculum to build a foundation between subject content, meaningful and relevant concepts and learning experiences.

In addition, Gibbs Pre-K supports instruction for English Language Learners and for children with special needs. Those supports include Preschool Program for Children with Disabilities (PPCD), Bilingual Program, and English as a Second Language Program.  The programs are available to provide intentional instruction to support and meet the individual needs of all students.

The daily schedule includes large group instruction, small group instruction, centers and physical education which are designed to provide opportunities for children to broaden and deepen their cognitive and behavioral knowledge through developmentally appropriate techniques and strategies.   Moreover, active learning experiences are also introduced to students in the computer lab, science lab, and library on a weekly basis.

Gibbs Pre-K Center proudly holds an ongoing partnership with Sam Houston State University. This partnership provides access to the expertise, resources, and tools to support teachers and students at Gibbs Pre-K Center and at SHSU.

Gibbs Pre-K teachers and staff provide all students with educational opportunities and experiences that will prepare them for a colorful future as they strive to to become lifelong learners.
