All about me

Hi, I'm Shelly Duer and this will be my 12th year teaching math in HISD and my 17th year in education.  I am a life long resident of Huntsville, TX and  have been happily married for 22 years.  I have 3 wonderful children ages 13, 17, and 20.   My oldest daughter attends Texas Womens University in Denton and was a graduate of Huntsville High School. I graduated from Sam Houston State University and have a passion and love for math and learning.  I have an open door policy and believe that with open communication, we can all have a successful school year.  I look forward to getting to know you and your child.

What is happening this month:

What will we learn this month....

Language Arts

Math

Science

Social Studies

In the month of September, we will be studying figurative language, traditional literature, fictional stories, and poetry.  Our focus will be to summarize, explain themes, compare/contrast characters and the changes they go through as we discover the plot of the story.  We will also enjoy writing some poetry and imaginative stories.

We have started off the year with data collection. Much of the data that was collected was gathered through “getting to know you” activities. This data was then displayed in either dot plots or stem and leaf plots. We will spend the next few weeks learning about place value and being able to compare and order numbers. Towards the end of the month, we will start our unit on Fractions. We will begin by looking at the relationship between fractions and decimals.

We will be finishing our unit on Properties of Soil.  We will be moving on to measuring, comparing and contrasting the Properties of Matter (length, volume, mass, buoyancy, and magnetism), and the States of Matter (Solid, Liquid, Gas).

We are studying the geographical regions of Texas and interesting facts about the Coastal Plains, Mountain and Basin Regions,  Great Plains, and  Central Plains. After taking time to remember the heros of 9/11, we will study the first people to migrate into Texas.

First Week of School 2017-2018

This has been an amazing week and an amazing beginning to 4th grade!  Thank you parent(s)/guardians for sharing your wonderful child with me.   Please know that my door is always open should you have any questions at all.

This next week in math we will be focusing on graphing using dot plots and stem and leaf plots.  In science we will begin investigating soil.  I look forward to another amazing week!
