Hallo! Ich heiβe Scott Bumbaugh.
Current teaching assignments: I am currently teaching German 1, German 2, and Pre-AP German 2, Pre-AP German 3 and AP German 4 and 5 at Huntsville High School.
Self-introduction: I have been teaching in the district for twenty-two years, and have loved every year of it. Being a teacher really is the best job in the world!
I was born in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania and am very proud of my roots. However, since my father was in the U.S. military, I had the opportunity to live in different parts of the United States (Maryland, Missouri, Colorado, Oklahoma, and Utah) and the world. I lived five years in Germany (1967-1969, 1970-1973), which is where I first learned the language. The first two years, we lived in a small German village (Waldstetten) and were the only Americans in the village. My sister and I were thus immersed in the language and culture. I graduated high school from Eisenhower High School in Lawton, Oklahoma. My freshman year in college was spent at Brigham Young University, in Provo, Utah, following which I served a two year church mission in Kobe, Japan. Following my mission, I came to Texas, where I finished my B.A. in German here at Sam Houston State University. I then continued my graduate studies here at SHSU, and received a Master's Degree in Political Science with an emphasis on International Relations. I consider myself very blessed to have lived in so many different parts of the country and the world, and hope that my experiences can help me be a better teacher.
I have had the opportunity to return to Germany many times. I take students and adults to Germany every other year during spring break. I also look for opportunities to attend programs in Germany to improve my understanding of the language and culture. I participated in a five-week Rotary exchange program in 1997, and a three-week continuing education course for teachers of German at the Leucorea in Wittenberg, Germany in June/July 2008. I participated with the Atlantik-Brücke Program in June 2014, and had the opportunity to spend a week in Frankfurt, Cologne, Bonn and Berlin with twelve other teachers as we gained a deeper appreciation of the German economy, education, and politics.
I have been married for thirty-one wonderful years, have two great sons. My wife, Loretha, is from Cleveland, Texas. My oldest son, Zachary, is a graduate of Huntsville High School. He graduated from SHSU with a double major in finance and accounting, and is recently graduated with his Master's degree from A&M University in College Station. He is now working in Houston with PCW. My second son, Nicholas, is also a graduate of HHS, and graduated from Brigham Young University with a B.S. in electrical engineering. He is currently working for Probst Electric in Heber, Utah. I feel they were well prepared for their university studies by their teachers at HHS, and am grateful they attended school here.
I love teaching German, and I have been fortunate to have wonderful students. I really do believe that there is no better job on earth than that of teacher. I try to make my classes fun, inviting, and a place where learning can easily take place. I also try to set high standards for my students, believing that if I provide a rigorous course of instruction, my students will achieve.
Contacting parents and students: In the past I have tried to send a daily e-mail to parents regarding homework assignments, up-coming quizzes and tests, as well as project rubrics. I will continue to do so. I also use Remind to send out a daily text reminder to the students about homework and up-coming quizzes and tests. You may sign up for a daily text message reminder. You will need to do this on your own. Here are the numbers for your convenience:
