Mrs. Sarah Mallory

My name is Sarah Mallory and this is my 15th year in education.  All of these years (except for two) have been spent right here at Scott Johnson Elementary.  I have taught 2nd Grade and 3rd Grade. I moved to Huntsville Intermediate School and worked with Life Skills for one year, but I missed our amazing elementary school family, so I came back to Scott Johnson Elementary because there is truly no place I would rather be!

I came to Huntsville from a small town north of Waco called West.  I graduated from Sam Houston State University and met my husband here.  He is a Huntsville native and we have 2 beautiful children. Cannon is 8 and in third grade here at SJE and Caroline is 2 and full of energy.

If you ever have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to contact me.  Your insight about your child is invaluable information and I look forward to working with you this year!

  • Good Morning Parents,

I hope everyone is doing well during this stressful time.  I know you are wondering what these next few weeks will hold as far as school goes, and believe me, the teachers are, too!  With that said, I wanted to let you know of a few things you could do to keep your child engaged in the learning process, even though we are not at school.

Let me start by saying that each child has a personal account they can log on to in order to access many useful things.  Each child should know their log-in information. If they do not, please let me know, and I can send that to you. After logging on, they can access ABCYa, Starfall, Storyline Online, and even our current reading adoption.

I would also encourage them to log on to iStation and try to do about 30 minutes a day.  This program helps them work on reading areas that are personalized to their specific needs.

Sustained reading is something we will be working on when we return to school.  We will be working on increasing their reading stamina by increasing the number of minutes they can silently (or whisper) read without being distracted.  Have them get some place comfortable with a book and simply read to themselves. Whisper reading is highly encouraged, because it helps hold them accountable for words they would normally skip if they were simply silent reading.  Start off with 10 minutes a day and try to increase that time a little each day. When they are done reading, ask them questions about their book, such as: Who are the characters? What is the setting? What is the problem? What is the solution?  They can even write about and illustrate their favorite part of what they read that day.

Another suggestion would be to access the STAAR release tests from previous years.  You can access these through the TEA website; just type in ¨STAAR release tests¨ in the search bar.  There are several years available, and each year has several stories. We used the 2019 test as our spring benchmark.  Feel free to go over those stories with them if you would like. If you find a story you would like to use, maybe search for a little video clip of the subject matter before you give them the story. This seems to cultivate interest in what they will be reading.  If you choose to do this, we ask that you not use the following stories, as we will be using them for instructional purposes upon our return.

    Name of Story

    Anything from the 2014 test

    M.D. - A Moody Day

    The Hardworking Cat

    One Giant Paper Airplane

    Amazing Kids

Please let us know if you have any questions about anything during this time.  We are here to help you in any way that we can!

Also, do not forget that the Green Hornet Food Bus will be distributing food to certain locations.  Dr. Sheppard sent out an email with that distribution information, but if you did not receive it, I will be happy to forward it on to you.

Again, I hope everyone is well, and I hope to see your precious children again soon!!

    Thank you,

    Sarah Mallory
