Welcome! What is the SCE? Public education has more acronyms, abbreviations, and “foreign terms” than Texas has armadillos. There is a new one flying around the Huntsville Independent School District – the SCE. I am referring to the Superintendent’s Council for Excellence that held its initial meeting on Tuesday, October 11, 2005. The SCE is a broad-based school community team that was created to think collaboratively, reach consensus on issues for consideration by the district, and offer input and guidance regarding our goals and fundamental direction. I realized a long time ago that “no one of us is a smart as all of us”, so the SCE is another avenue in the district to bring a variety of stakeholders together to help me do the best job in my role as “advisor to the Board of Trustees” and “Chief Educational Leader” for the district staff. I have also learned though the years that a public school district is not the “possession” of any one of us – it belongs to all of us. The best way I know of to live and lead by that principle is to welcome stakeholder participation in the planning and decision-making process and to strive to maintain an inclusive climate in the school/community relationship. So, this year as we began looking at (1) district core beliefs and values , (2) district vision - the desirable future we “see” regarding what our children will be as a result of their K-12 journey, and (3) district mission - a brief statement of “why we are in business; what we do”, the SCE seemed a natural venue for such thinking that will have a far-reaching impact on our children. Approximately 100 members of the SCE will be meeting monthly to this end. The SCE includes parents, non-parent residents, business representatives, retired residents, teachers, administrators, support staff personnel, high school students, and recent graduates. Their time and commitment is genuinely appreciated, and the products of their thinking will be posted soon on this District Website link for all to review. Your comments are welcomed and encouraged. My email is rmontgomery@huntsville-isd.org and my telephone number is 295-2572. Perhaps you will be interested in serving on the SCE in the future. -- Richard H. Montgomery, Ph.D. |
